MIAMI’S VICE CITY ROLLERS have partnered with FORGOTTEN SOLDIERS OUTREACH

Vice City Rollers

Miami, FL – On May 5th at Suniland Hockey Rink, 9300 Coral Reef Drive, Miami at 6:30pm, Miami’s very own Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby team will begin their 2012 Season against the visiting Bradentucky Bombers from Florida's West Coast. This Derby will be extra special, as the MIAMI’S VICE CITY ROLLERS have partnered with FORGOTTEN SOLDIERS OUTREACH (“FSO”) to have a booth at the derby in order to collect donated items to place in their monthly “We Care” packages sent to troops overseas.

“Some of the derby women and men of Miami’s Vice City Rollers serve our country, while others are daughters, sisters, and wives of military men and women. We wanted to honor those who fight for our country, the country where we’re free to strap on skates, hip-check and hip whip each other; this is why we've teamed up with the Forgotten Soldiers Outreach. It is a perfect way for us to honor them. Forgotten Soldiers Outreach will have a booth at our May 5th bout where they will be collecting donation items to send to our troops. We encourage people to bring donation items to our bout and receive $2 off your entrance at the door.*” *pre-sale tickets not included, says Bandida #1337 of the Vice City Rollers.

“This is exciting to be a part of a RENEWED sport, and to be able to introduce our venue to the players and the attendees. We are so happy to have them partner with us at this event. We encourage all ages to come and watch and enjoy the Bout and to stop by and visit the Forgotten Soldiers Outreach booth to write a letter to a soldier. We welcome the public to come out on May 5th as we continue our mission to support our troops who put their lives on the line for us to protect our freedom," says Lynelle Chauncey Zelnar, Executive Director and Founder of Forgotten Soldiers Outreach, Inc. and Cutler Bay resident.

Currently, FSO is low on the following items: Slim Jims/Beef Jerky, Batteries (AA, AAA), travel size baby powder, q-tips, dental floss and Chapstick. For a more detailed list, please go to http://www.forgottensoldiers.org/help/donate-items-list/

LEVEL UP

Hello, all! I have returned from what seems to have been a short hiatus. I would have written sooner, but time has become a valuable commodity these days and I don't seem to have enough of it anymore!

I have some important news! Last week was my league's Spring fresh meat tryouts. I thought for SURE I would be prepared for it now, with seven months of recreational league practices under my belt. Guess what? I was right! I made the fresh meat cut! I'm so excited!

As I am a Tumblrite, I keep a close eye on the "roller derby" tag. I often see girls mentioning that they just started roller derby (or in some cases, skating at all) and that they're fresh meat. It irks me sometimes because it's taken me seven months to get on that level. But then I remember that I'm part of a league that ranks #22 in the WFTDA and that being a fresh meat skater is no joke (you're expected to be able to do everything well already). Then my accomplishment is just that much sweeter. I suppose it's just a difference in what "fresh meat" means to different leagues.

So now I'll be training three times a week and I'm just so excited about the possibility of being drafted to one of our amazing home teams. (:

Until we meet again,

Blown Apart

As you all know, us derby girls can pretty much do anything. Some of us are lawyers, physicians, therapists, and none of us ever wears one hat! Let's show the world what Derby girls can do and vote for one of us and we'll make you proud!

Take Missy Mantle (Phoebe P. Gyronator) for example a native New Yorker with an exemplary skill for juking and grilling (not at the same time, of course)! Her burger is the Gyronator a gyro inspired burger with Feta, homemade Tzatziki sauce, fresh Florida tomato and red onions. Miami Grind Burger Battle

For those of you derby girls watching your diet, you can vote for La Bandida (Olga M.s Caprese Burger). It's a turkey burger with Sicilian undertones. This burger features fresh caprese salad made with fresh mozzarella, fresh basil, heirloom tomato, crushed sea salt, balsamic vinaigrette, and extra virgin olive oil. Married with a Siciilian spiced Turkey patty and turkey bacon all on a spicy garlicy ciabatta bread.

WHAT'S MOST IMPORTANT IS THAT YOU VOTE! Vote for PHOEBE P. or OLGA M. Support Roller Girls everywhere and VOTE by clicking this link. SHOW THE WORLD WHAT DERBY GIRLS CAN DO!

The Happiest Days of Our Lives

Hello! B.A here again! Now that school's out for Spring Break, I'll have plenty of time to skate and be merry. Everything's been going so great for me lately and I'd like to share my joy with the FYRG community!

After identifying my weakness[es] a while back, I decided that the best thing to do would be to not give up like a sissy girl. So I didn’t. I’ve been working my ass off for the past couple of months. Though not literally—that would be horrible. LOL. Anyway, I’ve been slowly but SURELY seeing my progress. Little by little, I’ve gotten faster, more agile, more attentive, more resilient; the results of which I’ve been observing in tiny increments during practices. As if all I deserved was a little pat on the back. From myself.

But put that all together in one night and it’s the bees knees. Months of pushing myself UGH it all just poured out on the track. JUST POURED ON THE TRACK.

We scrimmaged on Tuesday. We had some really good skaters on my team and with the addition of myself, we were pretty much unstoppable, aha. Sorry for the arrogance, but I think I’ve earned it. I jammed a few times. Maybe three. Not sure. What matters in this story, however, is that holy shit, I slid through those blockers. I even jumped the apex during a jam. I JUMPED THE MOTHERFUCKING APEX! I never thought that would be something I'd have to do, much less be able to do. But there you have it!

After getting grand slams every jam I jammed for, I was kind of tired so I retreated back to blocking. Ha. The girls on my team were all, “way to go!” or “good job!” and such when I’d come back to the box. ( ‘: I’ve heard that before, but…it just means so much more these days. Even our trainer told me I was doing great. This guy doesn’t just HAND out compliments, people. I thought that maybe I was doing so well because I’m playing against rookies, but it’s still something.

Then, finally, when we were all taking our gear off and such, a skater for one of our home teams comes up and tells me that I did great, etc, etc and that I’m gonna be a great jammer. I’m gonna be a jammer, guys. I’m one of the chosen ones.

With this much improvement and confidence in myself, I know I'm going to own at the home team tryouts at the end of the month. I'm so excited!

Roller Derby in New Zealand!

This weekend in Hamilton New Zealand, Hellmilton Roller Ghouls will be playing  Mount Militia Derby Crew at the International Tattoo and Art Expo. In the morning there will be 30 minute demo bouts featuring skaters from all around new Zealand and it looks like yours truly may be playing in one of these demo teams. I'm not sure how this will go down as I have not yet popped my bout cherry. The idea of playing against some of my Kiwi derby hero's, let alone skaters I have never met  is slightly frightening at this stage. I am however looking forward to sharing this experience with you FYRG readers and growing from it!

Snacking for Practices

Sorry guys it's been so long since I've posted. I had my very FIRST BOUT last weekend and I spent about two weeks mentally and physically preparing myself for it. It was awesome! Since 85% of the skaters on our team are brand new to derby, we kept turning to our 3 veterans with a million pre-bout questions. One of the big ones that came up was what to eat prior to the bout. Since most of the suggestions were to eat healthy, I thought I'd put together a post on healthy snacks to eat on game days as well as in your everyday life since we all know training for derby doesn't stop on the track. If you bog your body down with crap food you're going to be tired and have a harder time harnessing your bodies natural energy for practices and bouts. So here we go:

  • Veggies with Dip: Fresh veggies like carrots, celery, and grape tomatoes, fill you up because of their high water and fiber content. If you're not a veggie girl, try dipping them in low-fat Ranch dressing (80 calories), hummus (70 calories), or salsa (10 calories).
  • Fruit: This is kind of a no brainer. Try something like grapes and string cheese or peach/apples slices with yogurt to add some calcium to the mix.
  • Nuts: and I don't mean the chocolate covered ones, haha. Almonds and other nuts are a naturally high source of vitamin E, calcium, magnesium, and potassium and are rich in protein and fiber. A high fiber diet will enhance your bodies ability to burn fat during exercising.
  • Hummus & Pita Bread: Hummus as a whole contains plenty of Omega 3 fatty acids, which are great for improving intelligence and maintaining a healthy heart. On top of it all, it also has iron, vitamin B6, manganese, copper, folic acid, and amino acids. The amino acids found in hummus that can promote good quality sleep and uplift one’s mood. Try using it as spread on sandwiches and wraps, as dressing to your salad or pasta, as dip for raw vegetables, or as side dish for main course
  • Whole Wheat Bagels with Peanut Butter: Carbohydrates trigger the release of feel-good chemicals. By eatting whole wheat bagels your body will pick up quality carbs, like fiber, for a longer-lasting high.
  • Ricotta Cheese & Honey: Whey protein, used to make ricotta cheese, is a packed with protein. Whey is a protein that’s especially effective in stimulating muscle resynthesis according to a 2010 Nutrition & Metabolism study. Adding some quickly digested carbs—like a drizzle of honey—to this post-exercise snack encourages your muscles soak up that protein even faster.
  • Tomato Juice:  I'm not a fan, but if you can stomach it you will reap all the benefits of its electrolytes. A glass of tomato juice is  filled with potassium and sodium. Having an 8oz glass before or after a practice delivers 6.5X  the sodium and 15X  the potassium you’d get from your standard sports drink.

Be careful not to overdo it when it comes to how much you eat before exercise. The general guideline:
  • Large meals. Eat these at least three to four hours before exercising.
  • Small meals. Eat these two to three hours before exercising.
  • Small snacks. Eat these an hour before exercising.

These are just ideas to get you started, there are tons of foods out there to help fuel your body. What do you eat before practice or a bout? Feel free to add your own twist and share them with us.

Push it to the Limit!

Blown Apart here to say that I tried my new gear yesterday and UGH it was amazing. The wheels are great, but of course I already expected them to be. So yay!

I couldn't have gotten new stuff at a better time. We were assessed last night and we had to complete our 25 in 5. The last time I did them, I unfortunately finished in five minutes and one second. I blamed my terrible wheels (I was using the ones that came with my skates at the time), along with a heavy plate and dirty bearings. However, I decided eventually that if I wasn't going to cough up the money for new gear, I'd have to up the ante and suck it up. So I did. After my dismal time, I started to go to the gym more often. I ran and biked and did all sorts of fun cardio things.

When I was told we'd have to do the 25 in 5 this week, I wasn't sure if I was confident or worried. Either way, I knew that my body wouldn't fail me after so many months of training. I ended up with a time of 4 minutes and 43 seconds. An 18 second improvement! I was so happy. I was the fastest of the three of us who were skating on the track at the same time. It was so amazing to see such improvement..to literally see all my hard work pay off. So with all my improvement, I leveled up to L3 (the highest level for rec-league girls). Now I feel much more confident about the spring tryouts.

It could have been the new wheels, too, but I'd like to think that I really pushed myself these past few months and I just couldn't be more proud of myself. Do any of you have stories of significant personal improvement? I know you do! I love seeing and hearing about and skaters overcoming obstacles. (:
